How do you think AI & Robotics will durably alter the future of society?

Let's start with the counter-intuitive quips: "there is nothing new on this earth" and "business is business". We are facing disruptive technologies-and "any suitably advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." If we accept that "this too shall pass" can we look beyond the current disruption to glipse the shape of the future-normal, when AI and robotics are understood for their benefits and drawbacks, and incorporated into the regular flow of human life.

 

With a Ph.D. in quantum electronics & bio-nanomaterials and a background in global strategy with the Boston Consulting Group, Jennah Kriebel uses science to understand the interface of digital/physical technologies with traditional business. She focuses professionally on strategic uses of emerging technologies. As a member of our fast-changing society, she focuses on inclusive work models and leading by example. She has been involved with startups in deep tech now operating at the 100M+ mark, designed an AI-track for SXSW, and built and tested a space-ready medical lab-on-a-chip with NASA. She is a co-founder of the Geneva-based startup, Scaphe Robotics.

 

Sharada Mohanty is the CEO and Co-Founder of AIcrowd (previously crowdAI.org), an open source platform where researchers and engineers compete to solve state of art problems in Artificial Intelligence. In a previous life, Mohanty was pursuing his PhD at EPFL on using Artificial Intelligence to solve numerous open ended problem in Health; and before that he spent some time at the Theoretical Physics department at CERN, to figure out how to crowd the compute requirements of physicists. He absolutely loves beer, puzzles, ugly equations, code, and building tools which are a treat to use! He is also an aspiring artist on a mission to bring AI and Art together !

Media quite successfully sell each and everyone of us on how Artificial Intelligence will revolutionize each and every aspect of our life (or destroy what's left of it!). While we have every right to enjoy this utopian dream, we are forgetting the fact that we will need a whole generation of people with the right skills to build that utopian future for us (or protect us from the dystopian future)! We want to figure out, how do we take skills around Artificial Intelligence, from the whiteboards of elitist researchers to the workshops of millions of engineers!

We live in a world that is becoming ever more connected and giving people everywhere a chance to participate in this development and prosperity. Blockchain is this amazing idea and technology that can help people all over the world in many different areas but the barrier to using and even understanding if are still insurmountable for most. TAAL Project and other initiatives like it will play a critical role in developing the future of Blockchain technology and its adoption. We have a mission to help people understand what this tech can truly do, how they can use it for positive change and how each person can participate on their own level. Mass adoption will not happen without the masses.

 

Nelly Moffett grew up in Mexico where she saw firsthand how not having access to education affects every aspect of your life. This had a profound impact on her and is a big reason why she has worked so hard to educate herself and why she strives to help others do the same. Since moving to France, Nelly has been heavily involved in creating and supporting initiatives to promote gender equity and inclusion in general. As both a woman and someone who immigrated to another country, she simply wanted to give back to the community that had given me so much. Nelly discovered Blockchain technology in 2017 and it changed her life. She knew that blockchain was special and that it could truly help people. So she decided to completely change her career path and move to Lyon to start the non-profit organization TAAL Project.

 

Fabio Sofia has played a pioneer role in the field of microfinance joining Symbiotics as executive director. Symbiotics is a swiss-based impact investment company created in 2005 and offering investment solutions to private and institutional investors. By year 2018, the company invested over USD3bio in more than 70 countries, indirectly contributing to the financial inclusion of >3 million micro-entrepreneurs. In 2018, Fabio has joined WeCan.Fund, a swiss-based fintech to leverage its expertise in development finance and embrace digital finance (for good) through crowdfunding and blockchain solutions. Fabio is also President of Sustainable Finance Geneva (SFG), the leading association promoting Geneva unique ecoystem, where finance meets impact.

Outlook on blockchain for good

Blockchain is a disruptive technology reflecting current social and cultural changes. Through its characteristics of decentralization, immutability, and transparency it allows to rethink the way people and organizations interact, store and exchange values. It ensures integrity of data and the automation of processes. By definition, it accelerates a more inclusive system, responsible behaviors of public and private actors.

Paul Wang is a Senior Executive, Cyber Security Advisor and a university lecturer in Risk Management and Economic Crime Investigation. Paul is member of the management committee of ICON NGO. He's also member of the Advisory Board and Cybersecurity Blockchain Advocate for Mt-Pelerin and of a cyber security company. With over 20 years of experience in audit and advisory at Big 4 companies, he has an expertise in Cybersecurity, Investigation, Litigation Support, Data Privacy, Risk, Compliance and Governance. Possessing a Master of Computer Science from EPFL, certified CISA, CISSP, CISM, CRISC, and a certificate from MIT Sloan School of Management in Blockchain Technologies, he's an (ISC)2 and ISACA active member.

 

Ricardo ChavarriagaRicardo Chavarriaga, PhD is a senior researcher at the Center of Neuroprosthetics at EPFL, focused on the conception of neurotechnologies that allow symbiotic interaction between human and intelligent machines. His research is aimed at understanding the neural correlates of human motor and cognitive processes and their use for allowing artificial devices to support humans by adapting to their goals, preferences and capabilities. Highly interested on the translation of emerging technologies onto applications at service of society, he is the chair of the IEEE working group on standards for brain-machine interfacing and advises the OECD working party on Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Converging Technologies on topics of health-oriented neurotechnologies.

Brain-machine interfaces: state of the art and societal implications

Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI) offer a new, intriguing possibility for interacting with our environment. Although we are not yet at a stage where practical BMI applications are widely available, the possibility of direct communication between minds and machines is expected to have strong impact on addressing societal challenges linked to mental health, physical disabilities and age-related cognitive decline. Nonetheless, correspondingly with their great potential, these technologies inherently bring multiple questions at the ethical, legal and policy levels.

 

Dr. Jean-Marc Rickli is the head of global risk and resilience at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) in Geneva, Switzerland. He is also a research fellow at King's College London and a non-resident fellow in modern warfare and security at TRENDS Research and Advisory in Abu Dhabi. He is a senior advisor for the AI (Artificial Intelligence) Initiative at the Future Society at Harvard Kennedy School and an expert on autonomous weapons systems for the United Nations. He is also the co-chair of the NATO Partnership for Peace Consortium on Emerging Security Challenges Working Group.

Pierre Maudet, 41, is married with three children. After completing his schooling in Geneva, he obtained a master's degree in law at the University of Fribourg. Captain to the army, he served with the Disaster Relief Troops as company commander. On a professional level, he worked in communication and events as an independent, from 1997 to 2007. At the political level, Pierre Maudet chaired the Geneva Radical Party from 2005 to 2007. He was then elected Administrative Counciler in the City of Geneva from 2007 to 2012 (re-elected in 2011 and then mayor in 2011/12); he was then elected to the State Council in June 2012. His re-election in 2013 and 2018 saw him successively head of the Department of Security and Economy (DSE), as well as Economic Development (DDE). He also chaired the Federal Commission for Children and Youth, from 2005 to 2015, and then the conference of directors of cantonal departments of justice and police, until the end of 2018. As part of his various political mandates, Pierre Maudet has worked to improve security in the canton of Geneva and pursue a liberal economic policy that supports innovation and competitiveness. After the publication of a cantonal economic strategy, he is now working to build the digital policy of tomorrow.
