Exploring the Future of Automated Driving with Citizens at its Core in Herford

To involve citizens in shaping Herford’s future mobility solutions, the ULTIMO project team organized a co-creation workshop to understand citizens’ needs and co-develop solutions for integrating automated transport into the city’s broader mobility framework.

On September 16, 2024, the ULTIMO project team, in collaboration with Open Geneva, DB, SAAM, Siemens, SVH Stadtverkehr Herford GmbH, and the city of Herford, co-organized a co-creation workshop at the Markthalle Herford in Herford, Germany.

Herford, one of the deployment sites of the EU-funded ULTIMO project, is a city embracing sustainable and active mobility. ULTIMO aims to deploy automated vehicle services across Europe, and Herford is keen to integrate these solutions into its mobility vision.

To involve Herford's citizens in shaping its future mobility landscape, this interactive event brought together residents and stakeholders to:

  • Listen to and better understand citizen needs
Gather insights into how citizens currently use public transport and identify challenges.
  • Brainstorm and co-create solutions
Work together on key topics to find solutions for integrating automated vehicles in the future.
  • Build community support
Foster a sense of ownership and enthusiasm for the ULTIMO project and on-demand transport services.

The workshop featured discussions on public transportation attractivenessaccessibilitysafety and security and connectivity and generated valuable insights, such as:

Key insights from the workshop revealed a clear demand for more flexible and accessible public transportation options in suburban areas like Herford. To truly achieve inclusive mobility, we need solutions that extend beyond vehicle design, encompassing the entire transportation experience. And of course, passenger safety remains a top priority, with potential for AI-driven solutions.
